In shocking news, Selena Gomez shared a post on Instagram explaining why she’s been out of the spotlight the past few months. I’ve been a little critical of Gomez not promoting her singles Bad Liar and Fetish and now I know why. She received a kidney transplant!
Selena has been open about her battle with Lupus, a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. In 2015, rumors of rehab were squashed when Gomez admitted she was receiving chemotherapy treatments for Lupus. (She did however check into rehab a year later.)
Selena has gone through a lot of struggles the past few years with a visit to rehab, public heartbreak, and major health issues. That can’t be easy while being so young and in the public eye.
It’s really great to see her raising awareness for this misunderstood disease. A kidney transplant is a serious procedure, happy to see she’s healing well!
Happy 40th Birthday Fiona Apple! The moody songstress has graced us with so many great songs over the years, it was hard to pick just one. I decided to go with Criminal, the song that really broke Apple to the mainstream. The video was on constant loop on MTV and received a lot of flack for suggestive images of a young girl. Apple was of course of age, but she’s always looked young and vulnerable.
Her voice is the stuff singers wish they had. The low register she often sings in is difficult for women to mimic and she does it with such ease. She’s one of my all time favorite singers. She’s fierce, fragile and not afraid to put her heart on display.
Since it’s Fiona’s birthday, here a bonus clip for you to enjoy! It’s one of the most powerful and emotional performances I’ve ever seen:
Disobedience co-stars Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams both went for lace at their movie premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Weisz looks frumpy in an odd a black and white Dolce and Gabbana dress. Her hair and makeup don’t help:
McAdams fared a little better in the makeup/hair department but that Elie Saab dress washes her out. Pale mint green is the wrong color for her:
Hopefully we’ll see some better choices at the NYC/LA premieres. I don’t understand how some actors make these choices. They have a team of people whose sole job is to choose dresses for events, and this is what they come up with? Someone needs to be fired.
Hand in Hand, a telethon benefiting hurricane victims aired last night across multiple networks. The hour long event packed in celebrity appearances, musical performances and heartbreaking stories from those impacted by hurricanes in Texas and Florida.
The show had a few good performances, but I choose to share this one for one reason. I forgot how good Usher is! I know he can sing, but I forgot just how great he sounds sometimes.
Usher performed Stand By Me with fellow Voice judge Blake Shelton. It needs to be noted, that Shelton is no slouch either. While his voice and style are completely different from Usher, he held his own. It’s a simple, understated and well done performance:
It’s a girl! Tennis star Serena Williams and her fiance, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian welcomed their daughter to the world on September 1st. Serena has revealed her daughters name is Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. and shared some sweet pics with her new bundle of joy.
It hasn’t been an easy few weeks for the new family as Serena mentioned “So we’re leaving the hospital after six, seven days, it’s been a long time, but we had a lot of complications, but look who we got — we got a baby girl!”
Serena and Alexis also shared this video on their Instagram pages channeling their pregnancy journey:
Sam Smith’s first release off his upcoming album sticks to what he does best. The emotional ballad is cleverly written and will cut right through you. This heartbreak song has a twist, with self aware lyrics that avoid soley placing blame on the other person. They portray someone hardened by past pain who keeps emotional distance and will never allow vulnerabilities to surface as a way of self preservation. Smith has never sounded better, with exceptional control and that pitch perfect tone we’ve come to expect from him.
I’m never gonna let you close to me Even though you mean the most to me ‘Cause every time I open up, it hurts So I’m never gonna get too close to you Even when I mean the most to you In case you go and leave me in the dirt
And every time you hurt me, the less that I cry And every time you leave me, the quicker these tears dry And every time you walk out, the less I love you Baby, we don’t stand a chance, it’s sad but it’s true
Hand in Hand, a telethon to raise money for those impacted by recent hurricanes in Texas and Florida will air tonight at 8/7c across multiple networks. Performances and celebrity appearances will be broadcast from Houston, New York City and Nashville.
Participants include Beyonce, Justin Bieber, George Clooney, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, Leonardo Dicaprio, Drake, Dwayne Johnson, Nicole Kidman, Will Smith, Justin Timberlake, Oprah and more. The broadcast is only scheduled for one hour and they have a lot of celebrities listed. Wonder how they’re going to fit everyone in?
You can watch the live broadcast here!! Remember to come back at 8pm:
New footage surfaced today of Rami Malek performing as Freddie Mecury during the filming of Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. The fan shot clip shows Malek and company taking the stage at Live Aid and performing a snippet of Bohemian Rhapsody.
People were impressed with Malek’s transformation into the legendary singer when the picture above leaked last week.
Someone spliced the video with Queen’s actual set from 1985 compared to the leaked footage:
The film will cover Queen’s rise from the 1970s through Live Aid, six years before Mercury died of complications from AIDS. The decision to stay away from Mercury’s illness and more salacious parts of his life led Sasha Baron Cohen (originally cast as Mercury) to leave the project. Bohemian Rhapsody is expected to open December 25th, 2018.
Jim Carey made headlines this weekend by giving a bizarre interview at the Harper’s Bazaar Icon’s party red carpet. E! News reporter Catt Sadler tried her best, but Carey wasn’t going to make it easy on her and give the standard canned answers.
Highlights from the awkward interview include:
“There’s no meaning to any of this, I just wanted to find the most meaningless thing that I could come to and join, and here I am. You’ve got to admit, this is completely meaningless.”
“Celebrating icons? Oh boy, that is just the lowest aiming possibility that we could come up with. Icons. Do you believe in icons? I believe in personalities. I don’t believe that you exist but there is a wonderful fragrance in the air.”
“I don’t believe in icons. I don’t believe in personalities. I believe that peace lies beyond personality, beyond invention and disguise. I believe we’re a field of energy dancing for itself. And I don’t care.”
“I didn’t get dressed up, there is no me. There are just things happening… Here’s the thing, it’s not our world. We don’t matter, there’s the good news.”
Carey actually makes a few interesting points and it’s entertaining. On the flip side, if it’s so meaningless then why show up and be part of it? It’s also not cool to put the reporter in that situation. I get that he’s being honest and perhaps trying to be funny, but she has a job to do as well and humiliating her isn’t a good look.
Some are worried that known depressive Carey is in a bad mental state and we should be concerned.
What are your thoughts on this?
Poppy’s Take: Sell. I hope Carey isn’t spiraling into something bad and was just trying to be funny. Either way, he choose this profession and to attend the ‘meaningless’ party so it may not be the best avenue to share deep philosophies.
