MTV aired their annual Video Music Awards last night, but you probably weren’t watching. With the season finale of Game of Thrones airing at the same time, over 30 million viewers set a new record tuning into HBO.
The fashion at the VMA’s matched the content of the show. Hot mess express. There were a few bright spots, but a lot of wtf’s on the red carpet:
It’s nice to see Lorde ditch the goth and go for something airy and feminine. The minimal makeup and hair is refreshing when paired with a ballgown.
Hailee looks young, fresh and fun in this short dress. The hair down/short dress look is perfect for the VMAs.
Heidi knows the VMA’s are the perfect place to show a little skin, and she took full advantage. The 44-year-old is definitely body goals.
The bright red, tailored jumpsuit is fun and flattering. She looks sleek and put together, but with enough spunk for the VMAs.
Not a fan of the white shoes, but the rest of the look is slick and cool. Cool enough to stay off the worst dressed list and given credit for the shoe risk.
This is a safe pick but sometimes safe works! The dress highlights her killer body while the glowing skin and wet hair are perfectly on trend for an August awards show.
Olivia’s short dress and dark lipstick give her a trendy but polished appearance.
Machine Gun Kelly
The rapper took a big risk with those pants but it actually works. The coordinating look fits really well making all the difference. MGK cleaned up looks handsome and confident.
Teyana payed homage to Janet Jackson by wearing an almost identical outfit to Jackson’s 1995 VMA look. Can you say abs goals?! Wow!
This dress would be so cute if you got rid of that bottom layer. The sheer fabric over some of her leg is poorly placed and throws off the whole thing.
From the glasses to the hooker boots, Noah looks rough. The VMAs are a place to take fashion risks, but this is just too much.
Zendaya looked great in a PJ inspired look at the Teen Choice Awards because of the fabric and fit. This looks cheap and better left at a slumber party.
This just looks uncomfortable. Plus we’ve seen Nicki in pink latex how many times now? It’s time for something new.
Where’s a good tailor when you need one? I’m usually a fan of menswear inspired looks, but this ill fitting ensemble is not working.
We’ve seen the sheer dress over visible underwear look from her before. This is so messy looking, it’s hard to know where to look.
The host of the awards looked like an 80s villain on the red carpet. I don’t know what’s worse? The yellow hair? Earrings? Eye makeup? It’s a shame because the structured dress is kind of cool, but the styling is all wrong.
This was so close to a great look for Demi but the tapered pants ruin it. From the knee up, it’s a winner – glamorous and fun. The tapering at the shins is bizarre ans super unflattering.
I either want her to put the coat on and button it, or get rid of it all together. Leopard and lingerie can work together, but not at this level. It’s too much.
Haven’t we seen Kylie Jenner do this exact look? Either way, it’s not a flattering design or cut for Rexha.
Jared is Mr. Gucci at the moment and wore a strange cape thing over a floral shirt and jeans last night. It’s not that it clashes or that it’s too much, it’s just plain ugly. He looks like he’s trying way too hard.
I like this dress on her, but the bird and bird cage prop is so unnecessary.
The dress is SO pretty, but her hair looks unkept and it really kills her moment. Michaels didn’t have to do an updo or smoky eye, but she needed something. Lorde showed how minimal hair and makeup can be paired with a girly ballgown. Even a natural/minimal look takes work and effort. The black section of Michael’s hair just looks like visible roots.
