Song of the Day

Genie in a Bottle – Christina Aguilera

Eighteen years ago today Christina Aguilera hit number one with Genie in a Bottle. Yes, it was 18 years ago. Sorry to make you feel old!

The sassy pop song and video put Aguilera on the map. Christina was in heavy competition with other pop princesses, but her insane vocals always stood out and differentiated her from the likes of Britney Spears, Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson.

Where Britney Spears was the cute/sexy girl next door, Christina Aguilera was always more dangerous and perceived as a “bad girl”. Needless to say, I always related more to Aguilera. Her first two albums were fire and although she’s had some flops recently, I’m confident Aguilera will be making a triumphant return soon!

Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba at “The Dark Tower” Photo Call

Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba attended a photo call for The Dark Tower at the Whitby hotel in New York City yesterday. Although they play enemies in the film, they seemed to be having fun with one another, joking around and posing awkwardly.

Idris looked put together and handsome per usual, while McConaughey kept it casual in jeans and a cowboy shirt.

I’m a big fan of both of these actors. What’s not to like? Talented? Check. Good looking? Check. Pick interesting projects? Check. I’m here for this film.

The Dark Tower comes out this Friday, will you be heading to the movies???

Sam Shepard dead at 73 after battling ALS

Sam Shepard, Pulitzer prize winning playwright and Oscar nominated actor died Thursday at his home in Kentucky. A spokesman for the family confirmed he passed away from complications of ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

As a playwright, Shepard was able to capture the dark and dysfunctional dynamics of relationships specifically within families. “Buried Child” won him the Pulitzer in 1979, he was nominated again for “True West” and “Fool for Love”. Shepard’s latest acting work was playing Sam Rayburn on Netlix’s Bloodline.

I love dark, depressing stuff so Sam Shepard is perhaps my all time favorite playwright. His voice and perspective was so distinct and powerful. He brought this perspective into his acting work and was always the most interesting man on screen. This is a huge loss of a tremendously talented and unique man.

Rest in Peace Mr. Shepard.

Celebrity reactions from Hollywood, Broadway and beyond have started flooding Twitter:

New Music Friday: Single Reviews

This week brings a solid hip-hop collaboration, a mediocre rock song, a great breakup anthem, a forgettable country tune, and pop perfection out of Little Rock.

You Da Baddest – Future, Nicki Minaj

Future and Nicki Minaj are a winning combination on You Da Baddest. I’m a sucker for hip-hop love songs and You Da Baddest is a version that works simply because of it’s MC’s. The beat is fine, the lyrics are fine but the performances make this ok song good. Minaj brings so much energy and spunk to every track she’s on. This one is no different. 3/5

Run For Cover – The Killers

The second single off the Killers upcoming album, Run For Cover is missing something. The verses sound like something a pop/punk emo band would’ve done in the early 2000s. The chorus is classic Killers and actually quite catchy, but it sounds like two completely different songs spliced into one. I’m a little bit worried about this new Killers album. They’ve always been unique and inventive. So far, their first two singles have been anything but that. 2.5/5

do re mi – Blackbear, Gucci Mane

Mathhew Musto, better known as Blackbear has established a solid underground following but has yet to really breakthrough to the mainstream. Behind the scenes he’s found massive success writing Justin Beiber’s “Boyfriend” and producing hits for G-Eazy. I’ve been listening to do re mi consistently since it was originally released in March. Adding Gucci Mane to the track should should help gain listeners and publicity. His verse is nice, but Blackbear’s vocals and clever lyrics are the real standout on this banger. A breakup anthem for guys is finally here. “Do re mi fa so f’ing done with you girl..” 4/5

Unforgettable – Thomas Rhett

Country songs have the special characteristic of telling stories better than any other genre. The songs then have the ability to connect with large audiences who relate or appreciate the narrative. In Unforgettable Thomas Rhett describes the first night he met his now girfriend or wife. “That mango-rita you were drinkin’/And that Coldplay song that you were singin’/And I bet right now you’re probably thinkin’/That it’s crazy I remember every detail, but I do.” The song is like a mango-rita, too sweet and lacking any real substance or depth. 2/5

Love Somebody Like You – Joan

Joan bandmates Alan Thomas and Steven Rutherford bring us this weeks most refreshing single!  Love Somebody Like You is a pure pop song, with gorgeous vocals and an upbeat 80s synth beat. Thomas opens the song with simple, perfect, swoonworthy vocals that force the listener to fall in love. The Little Rock based group is a breath of fresh air in a pop landscape largely consisting of EDM beats and autotune. 4.5/5

Titanic Reunion

Last night was the annual Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation gala in St. Tropez. The gala is a glitzy event where Leo hits up his celebrity friends for money by sitting them next to the Victoria’s Secret model of their choice. Just kidding, he doesn’t do that. But it’s believable isn’t it??

Stars like Madonna (barf), Sean Penn (double barf) and Lenny Kravitz (fine) came out to support Leo. However, an Instagram photo from Billy Zane is garnering the most attention today:

Clever caption Zane.

Leo, Kate Winslet and Billy Zane famously starred in Titanic together. Am I the only one who kind of liked Cal? Stupid Rose should’ve stayed with Cal instead of whoring it up with Jack and ruining his life. The real villain of Titanic is slut Rose not Cal!

You’ll Float Too

If you’re having trouble staying awake, you’re in luck! The full trailer for It came out today, and you probably won’t sleep after watching it.

I hate clowns! They’re already scary and weird. A grown person who hides their identity by putting on face paint and a weird outfit to go play with children??? No thanks creep.

Tim Curry’s original portrayal of Pennywise in the 1990 mini series was terrifying. There’s no way the new versions will be as scary, right? Wrong. This Pennywise still scares the crap out of me. Who wouldn’t be afraid of him? He’s a menacing clown who preys on children.

In case you haven’t already figured it out, clowns aren’t my thing. However, I do enjoy scary movies and Stephen King. I think I’ll watch this one at home, with the lights on, during the day….Maybe.

Boys – Charli XCX

Charli XCX dropped the perfect video for boy crazy people like me today for her new single aptly titled Boys. In the song lyrics, Charli describes not getting anything done because she was busy thinking about boys. I can relate. Especially with these boys.

The music video stars a slew of recognizable faces including Joe Jonas, Khalid, Diplo, Wiz Khalifa, G Eazy, Riz Ahmed, Ty Dolla Sign, Vampire Weekend, Chromeo, Charlie Puth, Brendon Urie, Will.I.Am., Mark Ronson and a bunch of other attractive guys.

My favorite part is probably Diplo and Khalid with puppies!! Boys and puppies? Yes please:

Charlie Puth and Lionel Richie Joining American Idol?

Charlie Puth and Lionel Richie are both very close to signing on the dotted line to become judges on the new American Idol. They would join fellow judge Katy Perry and host Ryan Seacrest to round out the cast before auditions begin.

I think bringing back American Idol so early is a huge mistake. The reality singing competition platform is already oversaturated, but nothing is going to stop it now.

Perry and Seacrest have already signed massive contracts, no word on what Richie and Puth will make but I doubt it will be close to their salaries.

Puth has the most to gain in this deal. He’s a successful pop star, but hardly a household name at this point. Judging American Idol could do for him what The Voice did for Blake Shelton and Adam Levine…If the show is successful that is.

Angelina Jolie carefully opens up about brad pitt split in Vanity Fair feature

Angelina Jolie graces the cover of Vanity Fair this month and is finally opening up about her split from Brad Pitt. Where Pitt was open and vulnerable in his first post split interview with GQ, Jolie is careful and somewhat guarded with Vanity Fair:

“It’s just been the hardest time, and we’re just kind of coming up for air,” she said of going solo. “[This house] is a big jump forward for us, and we’re all trying to do our best to heal our family.” Jolie added that “Things got bad” int he summer of 2016, before correcting herself. “I didn’t want to use that word… Things became ‘difficult.'”

The reporter said Jolie became “defensive” when she brought up “Hollywood talk” that Pitt craved a “more stable, normal life” than the always-on-the-go one the family was living. “[Our lifestyle] was not in any way a negative. That was not the problem. That is and will remain one of the wonderful opportunities we are able to give our children,” she responded. “They’re six very strong-minded, thoughtful, worldly individuals. I’m very proud of them.”

“They’ve been very brave. They were very brave,” she added of the children. “In times they needed to be. We’re all just healing from the events that led to the filing … They’re not healing from divorce. They’re healing from some … from life, from things in life.”

Jolie also addressed Pitt’s GQ interview saying she wasn’t surprised by it:

“We care for each other and care about our family, and we are both working towards the same goal,” she said when asked if their communication has improved. “I was very worried about my mother, growing up a lot. I do not want my children to be worried about me. I think it’s very important to cry in the shower and not in front of them. They need to know that everything’s going to be all right even when you’re not sure it is.”

She looks like a movie star in the stunning photo spread:
